7layers Testing Services Used in First-Ever OmniAir® V2X Certification of Roadside Units

Silicon Valley, California, 22-Oct-2018 – 7layers, a Bureau Veritas Group Company, has announced that its certification testing services were utilized in the first OmniAir® Certification program for roadside units (RSU) — awarded to Siemens Mobility for its Sitraffic ESCos RSU.

The OmniAir® Certification program for Connected Vehicles provides testing and confirmation for interoperability among onboard units (OBU) and RSUs using Dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) technology. Siemens’ Sitraffic ESCoS recently passed the OmniAir Consortium® requirements, which are based upon USDOT’s RSU 4.1 specification.

7layers was chosen as the OmniAir Authorized Test Laboratory due to its proven experience in V2X testing. 7layers was the first OmniAir Authorized Test Laboratory for connected vehicles and were also the chosen laboratory to test the first OBU that earned OmniAir® Certification.

“Siemens was impressed and satisfied with the expert testing and domain knowledge provided by 7Layers during the testing phase,” remarked Marcus Welz, CEO Intelligent Traffic Systems at Siemens Mobility, Inc. “The OmniAir Certification program for connected vehicles technology applies the highest standards to measure compliance and quality and, importantly, ensure interoperability among products and services.  We are proud that our Sitraffic ESCoS Roadside Unit is the first of its kind to be ‘OmniAir certified’,” Welz continued.

“For a strong connected vehicle ecosystem to exist it’s important that both RSUs and OBUs go through the same certification process to ensure high-quality and trusted communication devices are interoperable,” stated Jason Conley, Executive Director of OmniAir Consortium®. “Having certified RSU’s available for connected vehicle programs helps deploying agencies make better purchasing decisions for these major capital improvements.”

7layers support the testing and certification of OBUs and RSUs to the OmniAir® Connected Vehicle certification program. The Bureau Veritas Group provides regulatory, environmental and conformance testing services creating a simple path towards global market access for DSRC-based V2X devices.

Background Information

Developed to support the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Connected Vehicle Pilot Deployment Program, OmniAir Certification verifies that wireless enabled transportation products meet connectivity and interoperability testing requirements developed from IEEE and SAE communication standards for the V2X technology. A vital step in widespread V2X implementation, certification allows device manufacturers to obtain long-lasting security and trust credentials. Securing certified or trusted communications devices is the key to seeing national deployment of these life-saving devices and will help ensure that users can trust that the components will work within the system.

V2X communication is the passing of information from a vehicle to any entity (vehicle, pedestrian, infrastructure, device, grid) that may affect the vehicle, and vice versa with its main motivations being significant improvement in safety, congestion and energy savings. The wireless technology behind the certified V2X device was Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC), a vehicular communication system based on WLAN technology
