MirrorLink® eases the way to the connected car. By connecting MirrorLink enabled Smartphones to a MirrorLink enabled vehicle, user have easy access to a variety of apps that are running on their smartphones but are presented on the vehicle’s dashboard and via its loudspeakers. Thanks to the enlarged icons that appear on the dashboard, apps are easy to use. MirrorLink is a leading, open industry standard for in-car connectivity.
The Car Connectivity Consortium® (CCC)
Leading automotive and smartphone manufacturers as well as vendors of consumer electronics are member of the CCC®, driving smartphone-centric in-car connectivity. The CCC has developed the MirrorLink® standard for devices and applications. Currently the CCC is working on further projects including “Car Data” to build eco systems for automotive services and “Digital Key” for usage of Smartphones to gain access to cars.
According to the standardized MirrorLink certification process, established by the CCC, only devices and applications that have been evaluated against the CCC’s certification requirements are granted the right to use the MirrorLink trademark. MirrorLink offers seamless connectivity between a smartphone and the in-vehicle infotainment system. Drivers connect their phone either wirelessly or with a USB cable and immediately gain access to phone applications via the car’s navigation screen and dashboard/steering-wheel buttons.
MirrorLink uses well established, non-proprietary technologies such as Bluetooth®, USB, Wi-Fi, UPnP, VNC etc. The access to applications is made easier thanks to Universal Plug and Play (UPnP™), Virtual Network Computing (VNC™) replicates the phone’s display on the navigation screen, and in addition to Bluetooth, MirrorLink streams audio with Real-Time Protocol (RTP).
