Successful USDOT Connected Vehicle PlugFest
7layers reports from USDOT Connected Vehicle PlugFest – centered around Connected Vehicle Safety Applications
The latest “Connected Vehicle Technology Plugfest” was held in Novi, MI between November 15th through the 18th 2016. The Plugfest was sponsored by the USDOT and co-organized by 7layers, a Bureau Veritas Group Company, Danlaw and SwRI. The PlugFest centered around conformance of devices utilizing the 5.9 GHz Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) technology. Most of the testing focused on the interoperability and conformance to the IEEE 802.11, IEEE 1609 and SAE 2945/1 standards for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications, together known as V2X.
The USDOT Plugfest comprised of two sessions
- On the first day, Session 1 included presentations open to the public.
They discussed testing and certification strategy which apply to the Connect Vehicle products in the US. The event opened with speaker Kevin Gay of the USDOT, who spoke about Connected Vehicle Deployments & Device Certification. 7layers presented an overview of the Test Control Interface and Preview of the 7layers’ Certification Testing tools. They were both geared towards helping familiarize attendees with the various test setups and provide an overview of the test requirements. Session 1 also included a special guest speaker, Michigan Senator Mike Kowall. Over 100 people attended in person and over teleconference for the Session 1.
- The following three days were designated as Session 2
They provided opportunities for both device-to-device testing and device testing against certification test systems. Participating vendors were provided an opportunity to test their equipment to the test specifications developed by the Certification Operating Council (COC), which includes 7layers, Danlaw and SwRI. More than 20 device vendors participated in Session 2 testing.
“Overall the event was a great success with large number of vendors participating. We were thrilled to see that manufacturers are aggressively preparing to certify their devices according to the test specifications set forth by the USDOT Certification Operating Council,” remarked Dmitri Khijniak, Automotive Services Development Manager of 7layers.
7layers services for Connected Vehicle Safety
As part of the COC, 7layers will continue to support manufacturers and test equipment vendors get ready for the upcoming certification program for Connected Vehicle Safety. Post the event 7layers is working with other COC members to help refine the test requirements.
