Newly founded 5G Automotive Association
is driving the connected car7layers supports V2X communications

The foundation of the “5G Automotive Association” (5GAA) was announced in Munich, Germany last week by its founding members AUDI AG, BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, Nokia and Qualcomm Inc.

For the new association, cross-industry collaboration is key when it comes to leverage next generation mobile networks and enhance vehicle platforms with reliable connectivity, networking and computing solutions.

Connected infotainment features and connected automated driving applications will help meet society’s mobility and road safety needs and enhance the driving experience considerably. However, such Vehicle-2-X communication applications require new generation mobile networks that can cope with the growing data volume and still provide reliable and fast communication. A further evolution of LTE and next generation 5G networks is therefore needed to make V2X a success. In addition to that, aspects such as data security, privacy, authentication etc. must be considered by its stakeholders.

The 5G AA will run joint development projects, interoperability testing and trial deployments to harmonize use cases and technical requirements, and support standardization efforts and approval processes.

7layers, a wireless test and engineering expert, has been partner to the automotive industry, to wireless technology suppliers and to regulatory bodies and certification organizations for many years. We are developers of the SODA model, which describes the interdependencies of IOT applications such as V2X, and the diversity of essential requirements that come with it. 7layers is currently working together with several connected vehicle organizations such as the USDOT, OmniAir, CVTA, CCC, Car-2-Car Communication Consortium or CCC for MirrorLink and welcomes the foundation of the 5GAA, which especially leverages next generation mobile network technologies.
