By integrating wireless connectivity into traditionally non wireless or newly created devices, interesting features can be supported. However, the path from a brilliant product idea to a satisfactory end-product can be stonier than expected.

Integrating off-the-shelf antennas into a new wireless device can be more complex than originally expected. Aspects like number of involved technologies, housing, shielding, cable routing etc. influence the antenna performance. Due to this even the integration of off-the-shelf antennas can be a surprisingly difficult and time consuming task.

Integrating antennas into short range devices

Integrating antennas into short range devices that support technologies like Bluetooth (R), WLAN, or WiMAX is comparatively straightforward.
However, complications often arise when more than one frequency band must be supported and longer distances have to be bridged. The interaction of antennas with their environment becomes stronger, the lower the frequencies are. As a result, embedded antennas supporting e.g. frequency bands below 1 GHz must be specifically designed when built into handheld sized devices.
